FAQs

The following are questions which we commonly receive. Our answers reflect what Oakmoon does as a coven; many other covens have very similar practices. We aren’t trying to speak for all groups and traditions.

How does one join a coven?

There is normally a common process to joining a coven, you might think of it as applying for a job. In Oakmoon Coven, the first step is to fill out our application for Neophyte Training. We require all of our initiates (regardless of background) to complete our Year and a Day program. Elders will review it upon submission, and contact you. We will potentially ask to meet for an interview, which would consist of different coven members of different ranks. Once the interview concludes, counsel is taken amongst the coven members, and we will collectively decide if you would be a good candidate for training. When training is complete, and if we feel you would be a good addition to our circle, information about initiation will be given. Simply completing training does not mean you are automatically in Oakmoon.

I've been accepted into training, now what?

Congratulations! Get ready for an exciting and informative journey to your higher self. You will train with a group and dedicated teachers. You will be expected to do a lot of reading, writing, discussion, and practice. Our training program is rigorous-if you do not have much time, now may not be the right time for you to train. Dedication and focus are important tools for success.

I finished my training, am I part of the coven now?

The short answer is no. First, it is your choice to ask for initiation. Second, it is our choice to accept your initiation. All of this is contingent on how you studied, and also if you are a good fit for our group. If the coven feels that  you would be a good addition to our circle, we will provide initiation information to you.

How old do I need to be to join?

You must be 18 years old or older.

What does a coven do?

Covens celebrate the eight Wiccan Sabbats and Esbats throughout the year along with Full, New, and Dark Moon rituals. There may also be rituals to celebrate specific deities or for other intents. Coven members attend (and often volunteer at) workshops, classes, conferences, and festivals all over the country. We also support each other magically, and help each other when needed. Covens are typically tight-knit groups of people.

What if I have never been to a ritual before?

No worries! Before every ritual you’ll receive a copy and we’ll discuss the “who, what where, when, why, and how” of the ritual. We’ll review the roles for those who have volunteered, and we’ll practice the chants. Lastly, there’s always plenty of time for questions.

What do you wear in ritual?

Some of our members wear ritual robes. Guests may wear ritual garb if they wish, but it isn’t required. Wear whatever is comfortable for you. We suggest that, if you don’t wish to change from your street clothes, you might put on a piece of jewelry, scarf, or any accessory that makes you feel magickal and special. Oakmoon Coven does not circle sky clad.

Do I need to bring anything?

We always share a meal after ritual, so you’re welcome to bring a dish or non-alcoholic drink to share. Some folks make and bake from scratch, some stop at the supermarket on the way and pick up a “little something.”
